At the age of 15, it was discovered that Gala El Hadidi had a talented, operatic voice. Enrolling in the German School only fueled her passion. “Germans promote classical music, especially, and I was encouraged to sing solo.”
In 2001, one week before entering the American University in Cairo as an undergraduate, El Hadidi passed her audition with the Cairo Opera and became the youngest singer to be invited to join the Company at the age of 18. She went on to receive her B.A. in Philosophy in 2005, and in 2007, an M.A. in English and Comparative Literature. Her thesis was titled, “Carmen: Debating the Femme Fatale.”
Gala El Hadidi has appeared in many operatic roles including Suzuki in Madam Butterfly, Baba/Flora in The Medium, Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, Ulrica in Un Ballo in Maschera, Lola in Cavalleria rusticana, Jenny/Lucy in The Threepenny Opera, Sacerdotessa in Aïda, Third Genie/Boy in Die Zauberflöte, Marianna in Il Signor Bruschino, Ernestina in La occasione fa il ladro, Clarina in La cambiale di matrimonio.
As a solo artist, she has performed in Italy, Germany, Finland, Turkey, Rabat, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt and the United States. This past June, she made her debut at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. One musician that influenced her style most is Egypt’s prominent pianist Ramzi Yassa, artistic director of the International Music Center at Cairo Manasterly Palace.
Gala El Hadidi is fluent in five languages and has won several prizes in French and German language competitions such as “Jugend musiziert,” and received a scholarship to attend the International Bach Academy in Stuttgart, Germany. She participated in many international festivals including Festival de Tres Culturas in Morocco, Festival des Alizes in Morocco, and Europaische Musik Festival in Stuttgart (all in 2005); Der Internationale Musik Sommer in Stuttgart (2006); Savollinna Opera Festival in Finland (2007). She is a Metropolitan Opera 2009 New England Finalist. Currently, the artist is studying for her Master of Music degree at Yale School of Music.
